ISO/ANSI Mode Using Auto-Optic Scan Head
ISO/ANSI Mode; Reflectance Compliance – 660nm wavelength (red) light (see Note 1)
The calibration plaque supplied with the Inspector 5000 is RJS part number 930-08, 253171-001, or 002-7410. The plaque’s 660nm (red) reflectance values are traceable to the GS1 U.P.C. Primary Verification Standard (see Note 2).
ISO/ANSI Mode; Reflectance Compliance – 925nm wavelength (infra-red) light (see Note 1)
The 925nm (infra-red) calibration reflectance values are traceable to RJS standards developed between 1975 and 1978 for the initial Autoscan product.
ISO/ANSI Mode; Verification Method Compliance
The Inspector 5000 gathers data and performs all ISO/ANSI method parameter calculations per the ISO15416-1 and ANSI X3.182-1990 methodologies.
No optical correction algorithms are incorporated in this system. One RJS proprietary calculation algorithm is incorporated to provide a more accurate and consistent Decodability calculation for manual scanning. This algorithm produces maximum accuracy for Decodability when the symbol is scanned in both directions during a multiple scan analysis.
The optical configuration meets all aspects of the ISO15416-1 and ANSI X3.182-1990 requirements.
The four round apertures used for the ISO/ANSI verification method are each physically inspected and measured to be within +/- 0.0004 inches of their intended diameter sizes when in the final optical configuration.
Final system test is performed by scanning a set of test symbols that are traceable to GS1 U.P.C. Primary Verification Standard (per ISO/ANSI) calibrated to 660nm and 6 mil aperture (or 5 mil aperture depending on the auto-optic model being tested). All calculated parameters are confirmed to be within +/- 4% of all target parameters marked on the symbols (see Notes 1 and 2).
Laser Mode Using CR1 or CR2 or CR3 Scanner
Average Bar Deviation Calculation Compliance
Digital data received by the scanner (see note 1) is used to calculate the Average Bar Deviation and the ISO/ANSI method Decodability calculation. This is the basis for all bar code element measurements provided by this verifier model.
The Inspector 5000 laser mode average bar deviation analysis is traceable to the average bar deviation calculated by the RJS Inspector 5000 ISO/ANSI method verifier. This makes the laser mode traceable to the ISO/ANSI method of element width calculations (which are also used in the Inspector 5000 to calculate the ISO/ANSI method Decodability parameter).
A reference symbol is included on the bar code test sheet supplied with each Inspector 5000 with a laser scanner. This reference is created by scanning the symbol with a calibrated Inspector 5000 and then marking the symbol with the location of the “A” in the Inspector 5000 average bar deviation graph display.
ISO/ANSI Method Decodability Calculation Compliance
The ISO/ANSI method Decodability calculation is traceable to the Calibrate Conformance Standard Test Card for EAN/UPC Symbol verifiers.
Final system test includes two steps for ensuring accuracy:
- Scanning a reference symbol and ensuring the placement of the “A” is calculated to be within +/- one (1) location marked on the reference. This equates to approximately +/- 21% accuracy between all Laser Inspectors for the average bar code deviation calculations.
- Scanning the Decodability (BAR) symbol on the Calibrate Conformance Standard Test Card at the proper distance and angle, and ensuring the Decodability calculation is within +/-4% of the NIST traceable value marked on the card.
Notes:
- The Inspector 5000 can be set up to be calibrated to practically any reflectance standard in ISO/ANSI mode. High and Low calibration reflectance target values for both the red and infra-red light sources are user programmable via menus.
- GS1 certified Calibration standards are manufactured to GS1 (formally the Uniform Code Council) specifications, using the ISO15416-1 and ANSI X3.182-1990 methodology, and are calibrated using standards traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (N.I.S.T.).
- Laser mode does not require reflectance calibration. The laser scanner is screened for digitizer accuracy to be within acceptable tolerances for bar width deviation measurements and ISO/ANSI method Decodability calculations.
- RJS recommends that the Inspector 5000 be recertified annually. This can be completed by RJS, authorized resellers, or by purchasing a Calibrated Test Standard Card from GS1
